What these calculators do, and what they do not

Each of these tools performs a calculation you redo anyway: a frequency rate at month end, a risk rating at every assessment, a sample size at every internal audit, the classification of an emission source at every reporting exercise. They run entirely in your browser. There is no account to create, no form to fill in before seeing the result, and the figures you type are neither transmitted nor stored.

Every page states what it rests on. Where a calculation reflects a normative requirement, the clause is named and its text was read in the standard itself, not in a third party article; the date that check was made appears at the foot of the page, so you know how recent it is. Where the standard imposes nothing, these pages say so too: there is no normative risk matrix, no prescribed sample size, and the word scope does not appear in the body of the greenhouse gas inventory standard.

And what they do not do. They replace neither a management system, nor an audit, nor the judgement of the person who signs the finding. They compare your results to no sector average, because we have verified none that is published and dated, and an invented benchmark costs more than no benchmark at all. Each tool therefore ends where it should: on a sound figure, a free audit checklist to go further, and the matching documentation toolkit if you have to build the whole system.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use these calculators?

No. No sign-up, no email address, no trial to activate. You open the page, enter your figures, read the result. This is deliberate: asking for an address before being useful turns a tool into a form.

Are my figures stored or sent to HEM Consulting?

No. The calculation runs in your browser, nothing is sent to a server and nothing is kept. Closing the tab erases what you entered. A company's injury rates, its risk ratings or its inventory boundary are sensitive information, and not transmitting them is an answer to that sensitivity.

What is the formula for the frequency rate and the severity rate?

The frequency rate relates lost time injuries to one million hours worked: injuries multiplied by 1,000,000, divided by hours. The severity rate relates lost days to one thousand hours worked: days multiplied by 1,000, divided by hours. Take care not to compare these to the North American TRIR, which counts different cases on another base.

Can I compare my results to a sector average?

Not here. We display no sector benchmark because we have verified none that is published, dated and comparable to your boundary. The useful comparison is first with yourself, from one period to the next, at constant definitions.

Can I use these calculations in an audit or management report?

Yes, provided you write the method beside the result: the base used, the boundary, and where the data came from. None of these standards imposes a value or a calculation method, so what makes a figure defensible is not the figure, it is the method you state and hold from one period to the next.
