Identifying environmental aspects and impacts is the starting point of any environmental management system (EMS). It is the requirement that gives the ISO 14001 approach its meaning: without an accurate map of how your activities interact with the environment, no objective, action plan or operational control can be relevant. This article explains what environmental aspects and impacts are, how to tell them apart, how to identify them and how to determine which ones are significant.
Environmental aspect and environmental impact: two distinct concepts
An environmental aspect is an element of an organisation's activities, products or services that can interact with the environment (energy use, wastewater discharge, waste generation, air emissions). An environmental impact is the consequence of that aspect on the environment: the resulting change, whether beneficial or adverse.
In other words, the aspect is the controllable cause within your organisation, the impact is the effect on the environment. A single aspect can generate several impacts, and one impact can stem from several aspects. Keeping the two separate is essential: you act on aspects to reduce impacts.

How to identify your environmental aspects
ISO 14001 (clause 6.1.2) requires organisations to determine the environmental aspects they can control and those they can influence. The method follows a few structured steps:
- Map the activities: review each process, product and service, site by site.
- Adopt a life cycle perspective: look beyond the site to consider upstream (sourcing, raw materials) and downstream (use, transport, end of life). See our dedicated article on the life cycle perspective in ISO 14001.
- Account for operating conditions: normal conditions, abnormal conditions (start-up, shutdown, maintenance) and reasonably foreseeable emergency situations (spill, fire).
- Consider changes: new projects, new activities, process or product modifications.
Determining significant aspects
Not all aspects carry the same weight. The organisation must define criteria to identify its significant environmental aspects, those that have or can have an important impact. Commonly used criteria include:
- the scale and severity of the impact;
- the frequency or likelihood of occurrence;
- the existence of an applicable legal or regulatory requirement;
- the sensitivity of the receiving environment (proximity to a protected area or watercourse);
- the concerns of interested parties (residents, authorities, customers);
- whether the impact is reversible or not.
The scoring method must be documented and consistent: it is what will justify, during the audit, why one aspect is treated as a priority and another is not.
From significant aspect to action plan
Significant aspects feed directly into EMS planning: they drive environmental objectives, operational control (clause 8) and monitoring and measurement programmes (clause 9). An up-to-date register of aspects and impacts, linked to compliance obligations, forms the backbone of a credible environmental management system.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing aspect and impact: listing impacts (air pollution) without tracing back to the controllable aspect (generator emissions).
- Forgetting the life cycle: limiting the analysis to on-site activities and ignoring upstream and downstream stages.
- Neglecting abnormal and emergency conditions, which often carry the heaviest impacts.
- Freezing the analysis: failing to update the register when activities change.
